When viewing the above site in IE8, you'll notice that the Share Site button at the bottom has like a drop-down(up) menu that is being covered up by the video. Can someone tell me how to get the video behind that menu. I tried setting the CSS rule for the video to z-index: -1. I haven't used z-index before though, so not sure if this is the way, but anyways any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

<param name="wmode" value="transparent" />
also add wmode="transparent" to embed. See Adobe Flash resource (http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/155/tn_15523.html).
That is the old method that can be slow (resource hog) and not work with all browsers.
Try wmode="opaque" instead for a faster result or update your Flash player.

I know of one other PowWeb customer who uses IE8, but it isn't me. Jenn from RiotSound.com uses it. Bill Gates probably uses Firefox but sells IE with Windows anyway. :D

I hate IE8, but come to think of it we may well (hopefully) see a reduction in the numbers of people using it over here in Europe as MS cannot legally bundle IE8 with Windows 7...

MS cannot legally bundle IE8 with Windows 7.
Really? Cool! That is funny. Everyone should change to Firefox if MS can't make IE work with validated code.

Here'a a link (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/8096701.stm) to one of the BBC articles about Microsoft not bundling IE8 with Windows 7...
Really? Cool!
I'm fairly sure that it's not legal as I think that it breaches European competition law.

I wanted to check my stats to see how many people use IE8 that visit my website but my stats are unavailable.
I use IE8 as 23% of my sites visitors do.
Most likely the 23% that have auto-update turned on and don't pay attention to what gets loaded.

Doc, I agree with you. Some of my clients experienced problems with other websites (not mine) and thought they had a different problem. Once they realized that they updated, they wanted to downgrade back to IE7 or "use classic mode" (like they did when they upgraded from Windows 98 to XP).

My stats are now working. 12.5 % of my visitors use IE8. 19.4 % use IE7. 25.6 % use IE6. 9.3 % use Firefox and 20.4 % use Safari, Opera, Google Chrome, mobile devices and other browsers. I think it means that many people had to use older computers and operating systems or simply did not update after reformatting hard drives! And many graphics designers use Macs.
I should compare with some of my clients who have different audiences. Wow! Much higher numbers for IE for Mick's global audience for custom motorcycle paint jobs. 25.2 % for IE8. 33.6 % for IE7. 14.4 % for IE6. 17.7 % for Firefox. 8.6 % for others. He gets at least 17,000 unique visitors a month.
Who uses IE 8?
Apparently those who use it are more likely to visit Mick's website than mine. The demographics can be seen at Quantcast.com for badasspaint.com if you are interested.

Agreed. I really try to cater to most popular browsers. I check IE7 (or IE8), Firefox, Safari, Opera, Google Chrome and sometimes mobile devices using a Blackberry simulator since I don't have a mobile device.

I think I can temporarily ignore all IE problems as I'm fairly sure that my stats would be 100% Firefox... I know this because I'm the only person who can access the site at the moment! :D

No that mentallity is retarded. You're building an unfriendly site from the start.

Rob was just joking.
It is best to design for Firefox first and use the Web Developer addon to validate the code. When most (if not all) of the code is valid, the website should look okay in most browsers. Then you can finally figure out how to make adjustments for IE if necessary.
We have already shown that visitors use other browsers and most use IE, so there isn't a web designer who won't design for IE. My son's school website has a message saying it was "optimized for IE", so he will probably need to use IE when logging into it for online assignments.
It would be nice if Microsoft would make IE interpret valid code. Or everyone would switch to Firefox. But since we can't make choices for people, we are stuck testing and tweaking code for various browsers.

I'm hurt!
Rob was just joking.
Indeed I am. I've finally started to plan the site in some detail as I finished work the other week and now have two weeks of "holiday" before law school starts. However, as it's just me looking at the site at the moment I'm mainly using FF and then working out the bugs in IE, etc.

Amen! I think that this guy (http://www.netmag.co.uk/zine/discover-interview/bruce-lawson)has the right frame of mind regarding all those annoying bugs in web browsers...

Rob, cool article about Bruce and the Opera browser. [removed]However, as it's just me looking at the site at the moment I'm mainly using FF and then working out the bugs in IE, etc.
Opera is fast and accurate. I still use Firefox for development, then see what needs fixing for IE (or others if necessary).
