When using your FTP program there should be a selection for transferring files via ASCII mode (for text files) and Binary (for images). If you upload a text file in Binary it will corrupt it and it won't function. Same thing if you upload an image in ASCII, it will be totally tweaked.

Some FTP programs have an 'auto' feature when uploading. This allows the FTP program to determine which method to upload the files but sometimes can't interpret the file extension properly and goofs it up. So be careful :)
