Networking for Dummies

Where can I find a step by step guide for dummies on how to make the necessary settings for a network? This guide would also need to have a list of possible error messages and how to solve the problem.

Like I see my other computer under my workgroup but when I click on it I get: "The network path was not found"

Practically Networked (http://www.practicallynetworked.com/) is a good site for network questions, it even has a "Trouble Shooting" section as well as a forum.
