Andrew just made an announcement about how posts are going to be deleted if they're not "friendly" or "constructive". bbrad then started a thread called "Deleted Threads & Posts" which was, well, not that friendly. He commented, "Please Lets see if this thread gets CLOSED or posts deleted." Sure enough, it's already gone.

I am quite frankly disappointed in the tone Andrew takes in his latest announcement. Starr has a nice post about how they know they have had problems, they're doing the best they can, etc. Then Andrew undermines all of that in his announcement by saying "We are trying to bring back the 'community' within our forums. We would like to keep the forums friendly and constructive. We reserve the right to remove, modify or move posts at our discretion and without explanation."

Andrew, I know you're frustrated. You've probably worked very hard at getting things going, and the last thing you want to see is a bunch of people complaining about the problems of the past few days and the few remaining issues. But look at it from our point of view. A lot of people are very upset that their sites were down, they couldn't access their email, etc. Lecturing them that they must now be "friendly" or their posts will be deleted is just throwing fuel on the fire.

If people want to vent a little, let them. If two are three threads get started on the same subject, big deal. It never was a problem before. Let people let off a little steam and discuss things.

Does PowWeb really want to start fighting with their customers? I don't think that's productive. Let people complain a little. If they have real issues, let them discuss them. If something doesn't get resolved after a few rounds of user discussion, jump in and help.

I don't know why there are suddenly so many moderators and why there seems to be this need to control people. Everything seemed to be fine before when there was minimal moderation.

To my fellow PowWeb users, I say look at the price you're paying for the service you're getting. Yes, the last few days have been disappointing, but nobody has personally targeted you. If you have any remaining problems, try to calmly sort them out. Ranting and raving and posting 14-point lists of demands is not going to help anyone.

Andrew, delete this post if you must. I'd hope you'd also delete your own post, and we can get back to how things were before. We're not going to get back this sense of community you talk about under threat of post deletion. Just let people talk things out, and it will be fine in a few days.

Well said..

I couldn't have worded it better myself :)

Yes I fully support what Rusbasan has said here and think it should definitely be taken into consideration..

I have not VENTED yet, and I won't. The truth is downtime costs ME money. I run a business through powweb and I have lost any chance at sales for for the last few days. My existing customers send me the same nasty notes that powweb is getting right now.

I expect that they will correct the situation, and I also expect "credit" for all this downtime, whether it's a free month of service or something else. It doesnt put the lost sales back in my pocket, but it's the least they can do.

:(

Like some in here trying to make something in this internet thing ... the previous outages [planned and unplanned]

have cost me money,

have cost me readers

have cost me potential advertisers

But on the bright side, if POWweb is the perfect host, they'll make it up perfectly ....

<stay tuned>

Nobody is complaining about the upgrade.

A successful business needs to grow.

BUT, information is and has been scarce with Powweb.

I also have lost money, that does not bother me as much as having the inability to inform my visitors what the problem is.

Powweb, I appreciate the email informing us of the occurrences.

However, it is too late.

That email should have been sent prior to any disruption in service, so responsible site owners could have had an explanation put on their site.

Funny after I read that informing email, my email ceased to function again.

Keep the communication paths open.

Fix the problems.

I think you hit the nail on the head there Joe. I've worked in this business for 20 years and I expect a little downtime every now and then. I KNOW it is coming at some point as 100% uptime is really nothing more than a pipe dream for most of us.

However, I expect to be notified of anticipated downtime, especially for a major change like moving service to another provider, so that I can prepare my site, and users, for the DNS propagation and other issues that come along with it.

I would hope that Powweb has learned something from this, like making sure that EVERY customer is notified of events like these before yanking the rug out from underneath them.

Regardless of the reason, I asked Powweb for a refund on an account that had only been active since 09/04/02. They didn't give me a full refund, instead they charged me for 2 months of service I didn't receive, plus a $10.00 early termination fee.

I payed for 2 years of service in advance. I am out $25.54 for 16 days of service, of which my site was only up for 12 days.

You folks gotta realize how hard it is to bleed the way we have for almost 4 years making Powweb a reality to come into our own forums and read some of the posts from our users.

Just relax and be patient. Time not only tells all, but it heals all too. :)
