Unhappy Media Wiki blank index page

Ok so a little over a month ago I installed Media Wiki and worked on it for about a week, adding many pages to the project. I let it go for a while and haven't played with it for about 3 weeks now, maybe more.

So today I was going to play around with it, add some new pages and boom, nothing. The index page is completely blank and nothing shows up on it even though I remember having a normal index page the last time I fiddled around in my wiki.

So what am I supposed to look for here? I have no idea how this may have happened as I haven't touched either the db in which the wiki is stored and neither have I removed anything from the server which may have had an influence on the proper running of the wiki.

I checked in OPS to make sure the proper version of PHP was running, I added some memory to the PHP file to help it execute scripts (was 8M and upped it to 32M). I downloaded both the local settings and the index files from the server to check them out on my computer but nothing seems to be wrong with them.

So basically, I'm just wondering where everything went. At least for the index page. I'm only hoping that the rest of the stuff that was created didn't disappear as well because I have no idea how it may have happened and as mentioned above, I didn't do any faulty FTP operations which may have altered the wiki in any way.

    Anybody can help me out?

Did you install MediaWiki manually or through OPS? Did you check http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Project:Forum to see if someone else had a similar problem? Are you running the latest version? Did you recently install more than one version? Did you recently edit your .htaccess file? Did you check your error/access logs?

I thoughy my post was most explanatory when I said that I did not change anything to either the wiki install or what was on my server that was related to it. Anyways, here are my answers to your questions Yvette:

Did you install MediaWiki manually or through OPS?
    Manually

Did you check http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Project:Forum to see if someone else had a similar problem?
Yes and I couldn't find anything related to my problem and I'm pretty sure that the link you provided me is for their website, not for support with Media Wiki. I found the proper "support forum" for Media Wiki and still couldn't find anything related to my problem.

Are you running the latest version?
I'm not running 1.8 but the fact that I'm not running the latest version shouldn't have anything to do with the fact that my main page isn't showing anything anymore...

Did you recently install more than one version?
Uhhh...no...why would I want to do that?

Did you recently edit your .htaccess file?
I've been with Powweb since November 2001 and have never edited it...

Did you check your error/access logs?
Probably the only thing I didn't do. Will do that to check if anything has come up.

I just checked my error/access logs and nothing seems unusual there either...

Sorry for all the questions, but sometimes you forget that you did or did not do something.

    I'm not running 1.8
If you don't update CMS scripts such as these, they can be exploited. That could be why your index page is empty. Some people will replace the index page with another to let you know that they changed it.

When Endurance migrated PowWeb websites, they made changes to our files to comply with the new servers. They change file paths in config files, change or replace php.ini files and even changed or removed .htaccess files. This should not change your index page, but it could change the way the script works.

You manually installed the script, so you probably didn't mess with the stupid script installer in OPS. That is good.

I added some memory to the PHP file to help it execute scripts (was 8M and upped it to 32M)
    Hmm...

I know that CMS scripts can be exploited which is why the first thing I did was check the index.php page that was in the wiki folder to make sure it was ok and nothing was wrong with it (like I said in my first post)

I installed 1.7.1 AFTER the migration so I doubt this has anything to do with the fact that my main page isn't working.

As for installing scripts, I always do it manually. The Powweb auto-installs are never up to date anyways...OPS still offers version 1.6 for Media Wiki...

I guess my last resort will be to reinstall the whole thing and start from scratch...nice...about 10 hours of inputting stuff lost...grrrrr

Can you back up your website and try to reinstall and import? First, try changing your php back to what it was. I don't know if that will help, but it wouldn't hurt.

Not sure what you mean by changing back the php to what it was...do you mean the running version? Because the version I installed wouldn't work under PHP4, it would only run with PHP5.

As for backing up my website, I don't think it's worth it...too much trouble for what had been done in the wiki so far. I think my best bet will be to clear the install and the db and do a fresh install.

You made changes to a PHP file.

It's your call. If you didn't have much done, you aren't losing much. But it would be nice to know how to fix it in case you did have more done.

I let it go for a while and haven't played with it for about 3 weeks now, maybe more.
Too bad you didn't notice this sooner. There may have been a backup on the server. Still, I keep wondering why/how your index file went blank. I hope it doesn't happen again.

Ok so I've installed the newest version...1.8.2 but now I find it to be extremely slow even though I only have 2 pages total in the wiki.

Anything I can do to speed it up?

Wow! The page was blank for a while, then finally the page appeared instantly. While the page was blank, I only saw the first line in your source code. The server was hanging on your second line of code which uses XML and includes French. There is the problem.

My whole website has been slow since this morning though. I was also using french with the previous version that was installed for the wiki and it wasn't that slow...

Man this is getting aggravating...is it because of my website that it's slow or is it slow all by itself?

Can I change something for the XML/french to work faster together?

I don't know if using the default English will make this load faster. Obviously, if you have a program with multiple languages, the program will be slower. But you chose one main language. Hmm....

I think the slow response had to do with the server I'm hoster on because it seems to be much faster now than it was earlier. My website still experiences a bit of slow response but the rest seems to be running fine...

Guess I was just too impatient to see my wiki work properly...

Much faster now. I think that xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" xml:lang="fr" was the problem which means it was the server for the xml that had slowness or calling it from here.
