So, here's an update (which I know you're all dying for)

We've done some pretty drastic improvements over the last two weeks, including shutting off query logging, adding more hardware, and distributing load.

It's not perfect, yet, but it's better.

The next step we're in the process of taking, is shutting down 10s of thousands of old phpBB installations that are getting spammed, and clogging up databases, and wasting resources.

We did a test by shutting off a few thousand messageboards, and the load on the MySQL servers dropped by about 1000% (literally), which is good. Our plan going forward is to shut off any other "zombie" message board from being spammed, and thus causing problems. When I say "Shut off", all we're doing is putting the board into maintenance mode, which means you can (as an administrator) easily turn it back on.

We're also going to be turning off guest posting for any and all phpBB forums, as that's where 99.9% of the spam comes from.

What can you do to help? Glad you asked! If you've got a phpBB forum running in your account that you're not using, delete it, and the corresponding database from your account all together. Simply removing the phpBB files isn't enough. These spammers know how to inject rows of junk into a database without needed the php files.

If you're running an older version of phpBB that you do use, upgrade it to phpBB 3, it's the newest, best, and most secure (and anti-spammable) version that they've released. This will help.

Also, if you plan on turning back on "guest posting", please don't. 99.9% of guest posts are spam, and will only make more work for you to go and delete them. The more people get rid of these old phpBB forums, update forums they're using, and delete old databases, the better the MySQL situation will be for everyone.

Stay tuned for more updates as they become available.
