    Running CGI as CGI::Fast

    I have been trying to determine if PowWeb supports CGI::Fast and / or mod_perl. I am particularly interested in CGI::Fast since it seems to be a less dangerous invocation of the server embedded Perl model.

    Now I know that PowWeb has the CGI::Fast module. But that's only half the battle. Even if a write a CGI::Fast application, I still need server side support to modify -- or to tell me how to modify -- several Apache interface files.

    I recently posted the question to the online chat feature. The question was elevated to technical support. After two days a response:

    "I have checked your issue regarding your account. Please note that 'mod_perl' and 'FastCGI' are supported in our server. Hence, you could proceed with the installation of application required from your end."

    Breathtaking. So how do I do the Apache configuration? No answer there.

    Does anyone have any clue how to do this since the documentation and technical support are sorely lacking?

    I don't think this is an unreasonable or particularly difficult question. For example, I went over to competitor name removed -- on which I don't have an account -- and immediately found the question "Can I use FastCGI with Perl?" listed in the Help Center. The answer there:

    "Yes. However you will need to create an .htaccess file in the directory containing the file.cgi script with the contents "Options ExecCGI"."

    That tells me all I need to know. I am tempted to try it here on PowWeb as well and see if it works but before I do I just want to see if anyone else had tried this.

    You cannot modify Apache here that's for sure. Try your work around and let us know how it goes.

    It was like pulling teeth going through the Support Center but I think I finally got my answer. The technical specialists of PW first assured me that both mod_perl and CGI::Fast were supported on their server but when I pressed them for details I got the following:

    quote removed

    Bummer. If anyone knows of a hosting company that provides such support I would certainly like to know of it. Only send me a Private Message because if you post the name of said company here you will get pounced.

    CGI::Fast is a Perl module and in theory is invoked from within the script using it like
    Code:
    use Time::Local
    . There's also info at http://search.cpan.org/~lds/CGI.pm-3.49/lib/CGI/Fast.pm
