    PHPBB - Email problems

    Hello.

when I 'forget password' (as an example), I am getting the emails from PHPBB, however would like to receive notifications of when a member posts a pending message to the board.

As far as i'm aware - I've got my php settings (within PHPBB) correct. would you know how or where I go witrhin the PHP script itself, to check how the BB is emailing me the pending messages notification (or where i go in the admin script to turn this on).

    Thank you

PS - So far, i'm just getting spammers, & rekecting / deleting all the posts. No one has posted a legitimate on-topic message (or remotely non-spam).

Don't throw the baby out with the bath water. You want it quick and simple for new members to register and post. Firstly you want the latest version phpBB3. I can upgrade and spam proof your forum without CAPTCHA or modifying core code but won't post how here for spammers to see. Then for email notifications check your profile settings. Set "global moderation" priviledges for yourself on every forum via the backend admin panel, you may wish to create a "group" to make doing so easy if needed for team members.

I'm not sure about the baby / bathwater comment.

    basically

    - someone joins the forum.
    - they post a message / post
    - The post is MODERATED (not on live board). awaiting to be approved/rejected.

I log in (whenever), & can see the list of posts that are awaiting to be approved. (so far, none of them have been on-topic for the group - All spam..)

The main issue, is that I havn't been emailed to advise that i have a pending message. And i dont want to log in every 2-3 hours, just to see if i have any spam to delete. Is there a way to get emailed on a pending message ?

One example of spam :- someone posting to this powweb forum, to advise about a new face cream from south africa. (example only - but its obviously not on-topic )

It means avoid over reaction. Stop the spam not delay legitimate users. Then you won't need to moderate and wade through spam looking for legitimate posts.

As yet I've had no legitimate posts

I've started a wiki - adding 1-2 pages each day. (or adding to existing pages..)

that got spammed to bits. so i stopped that (prevented spam), & created the forum. if i find alive - non spam, person, i may give them edit access to wiki...

One day, i'll find my 1st non-spmamer - the topic is rather specialised, & not a chit-chat / every day kind of topic that a lot of folk will want to participate.
i'm not bothered by anything - just looking for a way to get emailed

no worries, i found the main PHPBB forum & posted something there too..

The easier way of preventing bots from spamming your forum is installing phpBB antibot join verification mod.

    https://www.phpbb.com/community/view...?f=70&t=568673

With this set up bots won't be able to register in the first place.

You don't need mods if you know how to use phpBB effectively.

It's irresponsible to install an open source application and let it be flooded with spam. Unfortunately it's all too common on shared hosting servers. As such typically the responsible suffer the consequences; slow response times :blacklisting :increased cost. I say, if you can't secure it delete it.

I am not singiling you out Pete, I remember you from miRC days and know better. I for one am glad you are at least trying to shut the spam gate. If only all 40, 000 users were so proactive we would all have lightining quick websites and email.

Not sure why would anyone be against using antibot registration mod for phpBB, SMF or vBulletin. Nearly all of properly managed communities use them as it's the best anti bot and spam measure. You set up a simple verification question, and all of spam bot issues are gone.

So far, no one has answered my original query.

EXCLUDING the fact that pending messages are spam or legitimate posts. How do i get emailed to tell me someone has posted a PENDING message?

Assume that i have 0 / zero spam posts on the live/public board. & have all the anti-bot things in place.

    Ie, I log in at 6:01 p.m. & find 0 pending posts.

Someone posts a legitimate post at 6:05 p.m. - but i next log in 2 days later. i dont want that legitimate post to be sitting there for 2 days.
