    SLOW loading joomla 2.5 site

The latest website I'm developing is slow loading. It is a Joomla 2.5 website. I have built numerous Joomla sites over the years and this is the first time I've had this problem.

I check the site speed with GTMetrix. It produces a Timeline graph that shows all the processes that happen when the page is loading. (Please see attachment) The second step takes almost 11 seconds of the total 13.62 seconds of the page load. That second step is the one where the most time gets consumed.

I can recognize all the processes after that 2nd one as template css and javascripts, etc. loading and they load pretty fast, taking only milliseconds.

What is happening in that second step? This seems to be where the problem is - but I don't know what it's about...

When you expand that item, it shows the following information - but I don't know what this means:

    Code:

I'm afraid the image of the graph is illegible. Can you post the contents of that second line?

I just tested again and same approximate results. 9.09 seconds this time for that second process.

Don't know why my image got shrunk... a new screengrab here:
    http://kcvideo.com/waiting.png

Seems to me that first step is browser calling out to url to confirm url and establish connection.
Step 2, is says is "waiting".... 9 or 10 or more seconds ... for what?

After that, in Step 3 onward, I see the scripts (css java gzip) and etc being loaded.... and all combined, they all load in 3 seconds or so. Whatever is happening in that second step is killing me!

What are your tracert timings like to your domain?

When I tried from here in the UK the timings were so bad I aborted the attempt to get them!
