    CMS for Multi Site

    Hello all,
I' m new here and not sure wether my question was answered in those before.

    Here are my requirements:

need a system to host a master site and sub sites sharing same code (for updates and so on).

    Exemple:

    an alumni web site:
    1) users register once to the entire system
    2) but users can "activate" an account for different schools
    3) each school could have its own website in a subdomain
    4) each school could use different thems
    4) with all schools and their members and visitors, sql connections issues must be properly addressed

I intend to use Wordpress, but I welcome suggestions with clear reasons.
    Thanks all.

    Hello ddelille,

Using WordPress Multi Site can sometimes become resource intensive if the same database is used for each setup. As it is open source and there are so many plugins there is a good chance you can customize it or find a plugin that will make it work to your needs. Always keep a backup of the database(s) and files for all of the sites - in this case especially because one single update or plugin malfunction could cause an issue across the board if they are all dependent on one install.
Depending on the necessary stand alone functionality you need to provide, you might also look at Moodle as it is an application teachers like to use.

    Thumbs up

    Hello Melissa,

    thanks for your comments.

Multi databases are surely safer but a real nightmare: imagine 100 s subsites with a Db for each.

As a matter of fact, I intend to use the same design for other purposes, like a memorial site with a subsite for each deceased, also not only school related.

It seems this has not been done before.

Any suggestions how to better achieve this ? I mean other cms ?

    Hi ddelille,

Thank you for your patience. I have been checking around for some further information on multi site applications. From what I have found there are many applications that can be customized to fit your needs, but not all of them are going to have the features available as readily as WordPress MS.

Here is some helpful information on two applications that may work:
    http://extensions.joomla.org/extensi...ple-sites/5550
    http://drupal.org/documentation/install/multi-site

    Hi Melissa,

many thanks for those links and the time researching.
The comments are very helpfull in understanding strengths and weaknesses of each product.
My only problem is now to choose one solution, since I was almost set on WP.

    Thanks again
