I recently joined PowWeb and uploaded my site (www.compeds.com). Somehow, the title banner of my site got changed from "Computer Education and Services" to "COMPEDS". I have checked the properties for the banner and the title there is "Computer Education and Services". Why did it change to "COMPEDS"? I have tried everything to change it back. Please help.

Hey Boogey Man,
I just stumbled onto your post and went to your site, and it does show compeds! I think you need to change the title in NAVIGATION view. Try it and let me know if it works.

Hi Spideree!
I'm glad it shows up like you said (COMPEDS), because it does when I go to the site also. I made sure the title is "Computer Education and Services" under Navigation view, published it, and it still shows up as "COMPEDS". I have checked properties and everything. It got changed somehow to "COMPEDS"when I first published to Powweb and I can't seem to change it. I'm using FP2000 and checked the html view and it says "Compter Education and Services" in the title. Can you look at the html and see if there is anything I can do there? I REALLY appreciate your help, and MERRY CHRISTMAS to you and yours!!! Guenillou |

Hey,
I juist thought of another reason it might not be working. Open your homepage and right click on the banner that says COMPEDS. A box should pop up that says Page Banner Properties, and you should be able to correct the title there. Let me know if this works!

I was just going to say the same thing, Spideree.
You should open the 'Banner' properties window. It should offer two choices, 'banner' or 'text'. Banner should be chosen and down below is the title that will show. Type in the banner title you want and save then publish your site again. It should make those changes across the board for all the pages that have the banner. |

Thanks again for your help, but I have tried this and made sure the full name is the text box under properties and Banner is selected. I even deleted the title in the box and retyped the title and saved it again (just to make sure) and it still publishes as COMPEDS. Weird!!!!

Hey,
After this, I give up, but in your code for the banner it says: <p align="center"><font size="6"><strong><img src="_derived/index.html_cmp_poetic110_bnr.gif" width="600" height="60" border="0" alt="COMPEDS"></strong></font><br> <img border="0" src="Page%20images/Angel.gif" width="70" height="102"> <font color="#FF0000"><b>Let there be peace and goodwill in your lives and on Earth!</b></font> </p> Try changing alt="COMPEDS" to alt="Your Title as you want it to read". After that, the only thing I would recommend is to ditch the hover buttons. In my experience, they're trouble: some browsers don't read them at all, and they end up appearing as blank spaces! Just my not so humble opinion. Good Luck!

Hi Reesa,
This is what I found in FrontPage on my system: <html> <head> <meta http-equiv="Copyright" content="©1997-2001 Computer Education and Services"> <meta name="Description" content="Compeds provides one-on-one computer classes in your home on your computer. Especially helpful for seniors."> <meta name="Keywords" content="Compeds, compeds, computer services, In-home computer classes, Computer Education, computer classes in your home, research services, classes for seniors, learn windows, learn email, One-on-one training, Help for seniors, Information gathering, computer training"> <meta name="GENERATOR" content="Microsoft FrontPage 4.0"> <meta name="ProgId" content="FrontPage.Editor.Document"> <title>Computer Education and Services</title> <meta name="Microsoft Theme" content="poetic 111, default"> <meta name="Microsoft Border" content="tb"> </head> <body> <p align="center"><img border="0" src="Page%20images/Welcomeb_Wht.gif" width="124" height="30"></p> <p align="center"><font color="#FF0000"><strong> <big><big> There appears to be no reference to the banner except in the title tag. The "p" tag just shows the banner's position, "center", and not the name. How can that be? I really appreciate your help. Maybe I should ditch the buttons made by the theme. Thanks again. |

Hi,
I'm stumped. I see the banner is working on all your other pages. If it were me, I'd delete it from the home page and try Insert, Page Banner, starting from scratch. Or I'd just delete it entirely and type the title in. Sorry, I'm usually a persistent nerd when it comes to these problems, but at this point, I really do give up...

You can fix this by FTP'ing to your server and manually editing the banner properties. However, there's some weird problems with your HTML code that should be fixed.
<body background="_themes/poetic/poetextb.gif" bgcolor="#FFFFCC" text="#663366" link="#996699" vlink="#006666" alink="#339999"><!--msnavigation--><table border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" width="100%"><tr><td><!--mstheme--><font face="Book Antiqua, Times New Roman, Times"> <p align="center"><a href="index.html"><img border="0" src="Page%20images/compedstop.ht1.gif" alt="compeds logo" width="155" height="151"></a></p> <p align="center"><font size="6"><strong><img src="_derived/index.html_cmp_poetic110_bnr.gif" width="600" height="60" border="0" alt="COMPEDS"></strong></font><br> <img border="0" src="Page%20images/Angel.gif" width="70" height="102"> <font color="#FF0000"><b>Let there be peace and goodwill in your lives and on Earth!</b></font> </p> The '%20' characters are a replacement for a 'space' between the two words 'Page' and 'images' when you named the directory that your images are stored in. You should rename that to 'Pageimages' without the space. Otherwise it produces 'extra' code that isn't necessary and could create some issues later. When using FP Themes, FP writes a bunch of codes and directories on the server. As a last resort, you can either turn the theme for your site 'off' and re-publish it. Then turn it back 'on' and then republish it. Personally, I quit using FP themes because of these problems. I started building my own themese utilizing the 'included content' feature and it works 1000% better since it doesn't write all the 'theme' codes. |

Hey SimcoWeb,
This is the second time I've seen you touting include pages, and I totally agree, BUT... themes still have some advantages over include pages. I think carefully using elements of each makes for a better Web site (look at my SpideRee Web Design site for example; that's exactly what I've done). Using a theme gives you the "javascript effect" in that the page menu bar changes according to the page you're on. Include pages are great for elements that don't change such as headers and footers, IMHO. BTW, I went to your site and it looks excellent; in fact, we're both using the same bg image. I put an afilliate link to your templates on my site, and will definitely be browsing them for future jobs.

Hiya, Spideree:
The reason I like includes better than using themes is simply because you can be much more creative. Once you're locked into a theme it's difficult to change the look of the buttons, banners, etc. If you use 'includes' the right way you can create your own type of 'theme'. This is done by setting your main page up in a table format, having a single cell along the top and along the left side of the page. Then, build an 'includes' page that fills those two cells....one for the top could be called 'banner.htm' and the one for the left would be 'menu.htm' for example. Then, insert those pages as 'included content/page' under the Insert menu into their respective cells. Put a background on the page, color scheme, etc then save as a 'template' for your site by calling it 'blank.htm'. When creating a new page, open 'blank.htm', add your content, then do a 'Save As' and call it whatever you want (ex: aboutus.htm). So say you create 10 pages like this and you want to make a change in the banner.htm. All you do is make the change in the banner.htm and it updates every page that has the page 'included' in it (which is every page )This lets me be MUCH more creative with graphics than what the FP themes provide. And, easier to update the pages since the FP Themes require that you edit the theme to make changes. If you use these 'includes' properly you can easily update a large variety of sections of your site. You can have endless included pages on one page. I even have included pages stuck into included pages ![]() Now, I lay out ALL my sites this way. Soooooooo much easier ![]() |
