Powweb's SSL offering

This service has been available for a couple of months now. Just wondering if anyone has tried it and has any thoughts to offer?

I was curious if sub-domains are supported (*.domain.com) and what https performance is like (compared to regular http access).

Its actually a rather good value for the money. If you try and go to geotrust directly and purchase the same level of certificate from them, it costs a lot more.

Right now only www. is supported. This is a limitation imposed by us rather than some technical limitation imposed by the certificate itself.

Performance should be about the same. There is a little overhead created by SSL but its very tiny and is actually so small its difficult to measure.

What's the difference between the certificate offered here versus the much less expensive .. nevermind.. mentioning the competition here is a no-no and will get erased.

My point is that you need to look at your needs... not all certificates are the same.. and it is possible that you find the certificate that meets your need for a much lesser price.

With that said, the price isn't bad, but there is less expensive options available.

There are. But there is the issue where we don't allow any thid party SSL's to be installed on our servers. You can only use the ones that we sell.

A good part of the price for the ssl that we sell is just in the management of the certificate.

You could order a $15 SSL from somewhere. But then you have to install it yourself, this usually means you need to have your own (expensive) vps or dedicated server. Or optionally you can hope you can find shared host that allows a third party ssl. Most dont simply because its a nightmare to support. A lot of those cheap ssls require extra certificates to be installed in order to get them to work correctly. They are in a lot of cases not true SSLs from a valid Certificate Authority.
