javascript error --> file not found! page worked before

I have several pages containing a javaScript error. They worked just fine until today (July 16). Now they give a "page not found" error.

Well, hopefully I am the only one with this problem. But if not, YOU have to worry that a page of yours which has worked for years is now not working.

And of course "page not found" is a suboptimal error message.

I contacted support about this.

Can you provide the URL of the 'page in error'?

Have you checked the error logs in Ops to see if there is a more detailed message?

There are several pages in error. This is one of them

http://www.110bridge.com/results7a.htm

Of course, if you make up a random URL you can see the same page as long as you do 110bridge.com

There is no listed access to error logs in the OPS Panel.

The offending line:

","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","", "","","<a href=gr/bm1105516.htm>6trav</a>var messages17 = new Array("<a href=gr/011060152787c1.htm>morning</a><BR><a href=gr/bm110601M.htm>Mtrav</a><BR><a href=gr/011060140049c1.htm>evening</a><BR><a href=gr/bm110601E.htm>Etrav</a>","<a href=gr/011060239088c1.htm>morning</a><BR><a href=gr/bm110602M.htm>Mtrav</a>","<a href=gr/011060327046c1.htm>morning</a><BR><a href=gr/bm110603M.htm>Mtrav</a><BR><a href=gr/bm110603E.htm>Etrav</a><BR><a href=gr/011060312944c1.htm>evening</a>","<a href=gr/011060419613c1.htm>afternoon</a><BR><a href=gr/bm110604A.htm>Atrav</a>","<a href=gr/011060501372c1.htm>afternoon</a><BR><a href=gr/bm110605A.htm>Atrav</a>","<a href=gr/011060600659c1.htm>morning</a><BR><a href=gr/bm110606M.htm>Mtrav</a><BR><a href=gr/011060615619c1.htm>evening</a><BR><a href=gr/bm110606E.htm>Etrav</a>","<a href=gr/011060771422c1.htm>morning</a><BR><a href=gr/bm110607M.htm>Mtrav</a><BR><a href=gr/011060701972c1.htm>evening</a><BR><a href=gr/bm110607E.htm>Etrav</a>","<a href=gr/011060857870c1.htm>morning</a><BR><a href=gr/bm110608M.htm>Mtrav</a><BR><a href=gr/011060887459c1.htm>evening</a><BR><a href=gr/bm110608E.htm>Etrav</a>","<a href=gr/011060945109c1.htm>evening</a><BR><a href=gr/bm110609M.htm>Mtrav</a>","<a href=gr/011061029711c1.htm>morning</a><BR><a href=gr/bm110610M.htm>Mtrav</a><BR><a href=gr/011061060461c1.htm>evening</a><BR><a href=gr/bm110610E.htm>Etrav</a>","<a href=gr/011061123662c1.htm>afternoon</a><BR><a href=gr/011061148805c1.htm>evening</a><BR><a href=gr/bm110611A.htm>Atrav</a>","<a href=gr/011061207187c1.htm>afternoon</a><BR><a href=gr/bm110612A.htm>Atrav</a>","<a href=gr/011061370958c1.htm>morning</a><BR><a href=gr/011061320553c1.htm>evening</a><BR><a href=gr/bm110613E.htm>Etrav</a>","<a href=gr/011061477211c1.htm>morning</a><BR><a href=gr/bm110614M.htm>Mtrav</a><BR><a href=gr/011061443341c1.htm>evening</a><BR><a href=gr/bm110614E.htm>Etrav</a>","<a href=gr/011061576333c1.htm>morning</a><BR><a href=gr/011061574632c1.htm>evening</a><BR><a href=gr/bm110615E.htm>Etrav</a>","<a href=gr/011061650888c1.htm>morning</a><BR><a href=gr/bm110616M.htm>Mtrav</a>","<a href=gr/011061736019c1.htm>morning</a><BR><a href=gr/bm110617M.htm>Mtrav</a><BR><a href=gr/011061764866c1.htm>evening</a><BR><a href=gr/bm110617E.htm>Etrav</a>","<a href=gr/011061828132c1.htm>afternoon</a><BR><a href=gr/bm110618A.htm>Atrav</a>","<a href=gr/011061911410c1.htm>afternoon</a><BR><a href=gr/bm110619M.htm>Mtrav</a>","<a href=gr/011062097830c1.htm>morning</a><BR><a href=gr/bm110620M.htm>Mtrav</a><BR><a href=gr/011062025702c1.htm>evening</a><BR><a href=gr/bm110620E.htm>Etrav</a>","<a href=gr/011062180352c1.htm>morning</a><BR><a href=gr/bm110621M.htm>Mtrav</a><BR><a href=gr/011062110644c1.htm>evening</a><BR><a href=gr/bm110621E.htm>Etrav</a>","<a href=gr/011062267259c1.htm>morning</a><BR><a href=gr/bm110622M.htm>Mtrav</a><BR><a href=gr/011062296669c1.htm>evening (open)</a><BR><a href=gr/bm110622E.htm>Etrav</a><BR><a href=gr/011062297079c1.htm>evening <199</a>","<a href=gr/011062334735c1.htm>morning</a><BR><a href=gr/bm110623M.htm>Mtrav</a>","<a href=gr/011062439976c1.htm>morning</a><BR><a href=gr/bm110624M.htm>Mtrav</a><BR><a href=gr/011062469925c1.htm>evening</a><BR><a href=gr/bm110624E.htm>Etrav</a>","<a href=gr/011062541123c1.htm>afternoon</a><BR><a href=gr/bm110625A.htm>Atrav</a><BR><a href=gr/011062558078c1.htm>evening</a><BR><a href=gr/bm110625E.htm>Etrav</a>","<a href=gr/011062616351c1.htm>afternoon</a><BR><a href=gr/bm110626A.htm>Atrav</a>","<a href=gr/011062700305c1.htm>morning</a><BR><a href=gr/bm110627M.htm>Mtrav</a><BR><a href=gr/011062731108c1.htm>evening</a><BR><a href=gr/bm110627E.htm>Etrav</a>","<a href=gr/011062885747c1.htm>morning</a><BR><a href=gr/bm110628M.htm>Mtrav</a><BR><a href=gr/011062815650c1.htm>evening</a><BR><a href=gr/bm110628E.htm>Etrav</a>","<a href=gr/011062972432c1.htm>morning</a><BR><a href=gr/bm110629M.htm>Mtrav</a><BR><a href=gr/011062901434c1.htm>evening</a><BR><a href=gr/bm110629E.htm>Etrav</a>","<a href=gr/011063058513c1.htm>morning</a><BR><a href=gr/bm110630M.htm>Mtrav</a>","","");

I see both the 'Page not found' but then it adds a 'sponsored' page underneath which looks like it's not your choice but being fed from somewhere.

The logs are under CGI and Scripted Language support:
http://www.powweb.com/controlpanel/c...giErrorLog.bml

That page that is popping up is the generic 404 page that is configured by PowWeb.

I am not sure that the line you are looking at is the offending line. Take a look at how you are defining the root path. If I go to http://www.110bridge.com/gr/bm110630M.htm the page displays. PowWeb has been updating their servers and if you aren't using their generic root path /home/users/web/b####/pow.ACCOUNTNAME/htdocs (where #### is a number) found here: http://www.powweb.com/controlpanel/c...nt/PHPplus.bml it will now be pointing to the incorrect path. I posted about this a couple of weeks ago on this thread:http://forums.powweb.com/showthread.php?t=87939

Fixing the line I mention, which is in several programs, fixes the problem.

There is no root path in my Javascript program. There is no mention of this problem in my error log (despite having occurred at least a 100 times yesterday).

Since it is a scripting problem, Powweb support lost interest. No explanation of why it is occurring now, when the pages ran fine for at least the last 8 months. No explanation of why a Javascript error leads to "page not found".

The problem has to do with the way the path is being being presented in the script and the way it is being presented to the browser.

If I am reading the code correctly, you are telling the browser the file is here:
gr/bm110629E.htm

I am not sure how the script is determining what to display or link to, but my guess is that the root path, which is defined somewhere for the script to pick up, isn't mapping to http://www.110bridge.com/. This means when the browser tries to go to wherever it is mapping, it can't find the page, hence the page not found error.

There would not be a scripting error, because the script is executing properly. The problem is that it is generating paths to pages that don't exist.

You mention that you fixed that line...what did you fix on the line?

I took out the garbage in the front:

","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","" ,"", "","","<a href=gr/bm1105516.htm>6trav</a>

I have a lot of lines just like that one, without the garbage in front.

No path is being presented in the script. It isn't a Perl program, it's just Javascript.

If it had something to do with the change in paths problem you describe, it would have stopped working before.

No, the code is simply printing a link in an htm page. You can see it working right at

110bridge.com/results.htm

So:

1. Powweb did some update or change Monday afternoon (or maybe Monday morning).

2. That update is sensitive to the error in my page.

3. For some inexplicable reason, the server objects to a bad javascript within the htm program it is delivering. How does it find the error?

4. Why does it answer "page not found"?

If I move a bad program to a new folder and give everything different names, the program still doesn't get served.

I am SURE PowWeb changed something, I am not questioning that. It is more of a question of WHAT they changed.

Normally what I have found is that they upgrade servers/software/etc. While the upgrade shouldn't break anything, it does have an impact on non stadardized code. I have had their stuff break both things that I have written as well as CMS code and components I have installed.

Things like upgrading the version of PHP to not allowing includes outside of the account have caused me headaches.

Another line on the same type of page (different website though) is

var msg = new Array(messages0,messages1);

I misspelled it as massages1. I got a page not found error!

I tried other Javascript errors and couldn't intentionally reproduce this problem. This I found accidentally.

I just ran one of the pages through a code validation tool and the results showed 1601 errors in the code output:

http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=ht...Inline&group=0

You might want to check them out. It probably has no bearing on the non error error you are getting, but it might help cleaning them up for standard sake.
