A friend bought XP Professional and she couldn't see alot of net content or log onto bank sites, error reads "Virtual Machine Not Installed." Sun Micro developed XP Java but I heard Microsoft wouldn't pay the bill and no longer proivide automatic install of VM through their site. I loaded her up with Java from a CD I had and away she goes.
Anyone else missing Virtual Machine ? Or did she get ripped off ? Croc Hunter. Last edited by Croc Hunter : 10-2-02 at 12:06 AM. |

I'm using XP Home and haven't had or even heard of that problem.
Well anyway, anybody should be able to download Virtual Machine from http://java.sun.com/getjava/download.html

Microsoft and Sun are having some sort of legal battle so if you need to get the Virtual Machine you have to get the one from Sun.
Hassle....and honestly I like the MS version better... seems better intergrated into windows then the Sun version but both work.

Yes MS virtual machine for XP pro and Home is included with SP1, it is there. Now there is a good reason to upgrade with SP1..

SP1 addresses many of the early problems of XP, but it also comes with it's own set of problems as well.
Some users have experienced from mild to wild problems after installing SP1. And, yes, some users have experienced no significant problems after the fact. Just wanted to give you fair warning, because once you install SP1 the only way back is a complete re-install of XP. Just my "For What It's Worth" |

I'm not sure I agree with this one... when installing SP1, a "restore point" was created. While I have no desire to roll-back XP SP1, I am fairly sure the capability is there!!!! Oh... and I'm an XP Pro user from (almost) day one of availability. No problems... only good stuff. ![]() Roger |

Roger,
What I stated was from reading MS's own newsgroups, and not meant to say that no one should update to SP1. I have read that users have experienced everything from "No Problems" to mild cases of system slowdown, to the worst case of the system totally crashing and requiring a complete reinstall of the OS. From what I can tell, I think it all depends a great deal on what hardware and software configurations that a person is running. Not to mention the different levels of "user common sense" that also comes into play. |

I just downloaded SP1 a couple days ago as well, and yes it did create a restore point which should allow you to uninstall SP1 if you want to. (Although I'm not sure how one would go about doing that.) SP1 works fine for me.

Yes Java Virtual Machine is not installed on any Windows Operating System that I know of right out of the box. However, due to the legallities between Sun adn MS, MS has been able to include it in SP1 for XP users. You used to be abel to just simply download the Virtual Machine(about 5mb) right off the Microsoft site. But no longer. Teh one from Sun systems woks great on XP if you are not wanting to upgrade to SP1. I use XP Pro on both my machines at home. I have Java Machine installed on one from Microsoft before they quit offereing it and the Java AMchine from Sun systems installe don my other PC. Both work fine, I see no difference in functionality. mikem |
