Flash
Dreamweaver puts this code into the page, when you embed a flash plugin into the page....
<object classid="clsid 27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=4,0,2,0" width="700" height="406"><param name=movie value="/location/nameofyourflash.swf"> <param name=quality value=high> <param name="LOOP" value="false"> <embed src="/location/name of your falsh.swf" quality=high pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/download/index.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="700" height="406" loop="false"> </embed> </object> this will in effect, inform the user if they do not have the proper plugin installed, and give them the opportunity to download the plugin..... |

Browsers and Flash
All Netscape and IE browsers since 3.0 ship with some version of the Flash player plug in. However, as Flash continues to evolve into new versions, the viewer may have to update their Flash plug in to a more recent version. It's a pretty quick download so it wouldn't inconvenience them to do so. If they'd update their browser to IE 5 or Netscape 4.7 or higher then they most likely won't have to do anything.

thanks chaps
thanks for the info. I really wan't a flash intro for my site coz it's well flash however i don't really want to put people off with a long down load so i will stick with what i've just created. i got some great advice from the forum on using iframes and did some research at www.htmlgoodies.com to set it up, i used a free java applet from appletlib.com and copied all the script to my topframe page then adjusted the parametrs using frontpage. check it out i'm quite happy with it. next is to go for a intro page which gives the choice of flash or not the page is www.wanbridge.net

Applet not working
The menu applet at the top of your page is not working. You might check the codebase source to make sure it's finding the .class file.
Also, if you want some hot Flash stuff, check these out: www.templatedepot.com/flash.htm |

Paul, you need to fix the source for your graphics to point to the right location. None of your nav buttons or banner are coming up.
As far as speeding up the download, you can try compressing the images a little more. Or, do what I did and scrap the javascript in favor of a Flash menu. I was using FrontPage hover buttons and got complaints (about 20 links so 40 images for the rollover!) and did the whole banana in Flash. Loads quicker and it's even prettier. You can view here on the left side of the page: www.simcoweb.com You can also make 'em drop down as well. |

try swish
Flash can be expensive.... and the learing cureve on Flash is pretty extensive.... if you've never used a program like that...
there is a program called swish... http://swishzone .com that can produce some pretty nice stuff... althogh it doens't compress it as much as flash.... text... small images... even sounds... can be done quickly... much cheaper..... and the learning curve is not as long...... swish is limited.... but capable... and a good alternative to flash for the beginner.... |

again the big IF
what happens with these flash/swish buttons if the user is not flashy? i don't want to lose site visitors, will they still get functionality? i think if users are told they have to down load a flash player they will walk, or is it surf away?
Checked out the simco site very professional i will add a link --- albeit a standard one till i get the buttons sorted out!!! |

Flash/Swish Player
The Flash player has been an automatic plug in since the 3.0 versions of browsers. No worries about losing people unless you get some crazed surfer who's still using Netscape 2.0. And, if he/she is... then they deserve to not see 99% of the web
Swish produces an .swf file which is the same extension as Flash. However, for 'working editable' files, Swish creates an .swi file while Flash creates an .fla file. Therefore, the two are not interchangeable for editing purposes. But, who cares? Swish puts out some very nice effects. |

simcoweb
You can import .swf files and edit then export, but your absolutly correct it won't mess with the .fla I always save the .swi if I want to edit later. $50 versus what $250 for the program. I can live with that for now.

Rock and roll, Alpha.
![]() The original version of Swish was only $25 and was great for text effects and banners. The new 2.0 version, even at $50, is a great tool. I've seen some great sites built entirely with Swish. I'm working with it right now to create some content for a new Ecommerce site. |

now to check out swish though i must be careful and not go to crazy and over clutter the site. i have added a link on my page to simcoweb, hope you'll reciprocate. i think i'll reset it to open in anew window. i will do the same for alphadesk if you wish |

Looks great, Paul! Tell me, did you have any difficulty in editing the Flash template you picked up from our site? It ships with an editor. Just wondered how you found the whole process in regards to ease of use.

no problemo
it went as sweet as a nut, it's limitations are that the editing is done in a flash player and you have to really sqyuint to see the text, then i realised that by right clicking i could magnify all so that was not a problem
you are pretty much confined to a set format but if your feeling adventurous you can changer the background colour, obviously you can add your own images and music and text, however there does not seem to be an easy way to edit the text font. but since you have the fla file i suppose you could monkey around with the whole thing to your hearts content. i would probably bugger it up and then it wouldn't really be of use to me but i can see how you whiz kids could really get to grips with this thanks again simcoweb and hey what about my proposal? |
