Unhappy htdocs folder missing

I am brand new at PowWeb, so pardon the elementary question. I transferred my web hosting business to PowWeb for an existing domain name. PowWeb tells me to place all files in the htdocs folder, but I don't see one.

Could this be because I haven't waited long enough for propagation?

I'm using CuteFTP to upload files, and I'm checking the site's temporary address at http://criplivercom.powweb.com/

hHi Cripliver....welcome

If you have a temp page, you have the folder setup.

Look again.

cgi-bin
htdocs>index.html (temp default page) is here.

Hmmmmm. Uh, I don't see it. I've FTP'ed into the root folder for my site as hosted by PowWeb. I see lots of folders there that I FTP'd, but none are called htdocs. If I open the cgi-bin folder, there are a couple files in there (htimage.exe is one) but there is no folder call htdocs.

OK. What am I not seeing?????

I have uploaded a file called index.html to the / folder of my site, but when I launch my browser and go to

http://criplivercom.powweb.com/

or

http://criplivercom.powweb.com/index.html

nothing happens. I get the "under construction" page from PowWeb, but not my page.

Any guidance is appreciated.

You should have a htdocs folder at the same level as cgi-bin. If you don't, create it. Put your index.html in htdocs.

hmmmm, seems to me that there HAS to be an htdocs folder already there, otherwise the default "under construction" index page would not be visible. The only files that are visible are the ones inside of the htdocs folder.

Nope.

I created the htdocs folder, then FTP'd my index.html file to it. I logged off CuteFTP, then pointed my browser to

http://criplivercom.powweb.com/

and then to

http://criplivercom.powweb.com/index.html

I still just got the "under construction" sign.

Is it time to bite the bullet and call on technical support from PowWeb???

Thanks a bunch for all the brain cells you're applying on my behalf.

You may want to contact support@powweb.com about this.. but since the default under contruction page is visible normally means that the htdocs folder IS present and functioning properly.

Also, you stated that there were files in the cgi-bin, unless you uploaded them, this is NOT normal. The cgi-bin should be empty for a new website.

Thanks, JJ, for your kind help.

You're correct. When I FTP'd my files from my "old" service to PowWeb, I probably overwrote the cgi-bin folder and placed some files in it. That's OK. I'm not using them anyway.

However, I did NOT instruct my FTP to "kill" any folders that were already on PowWeb, so I truly don't know why the htdocs folder is missing.

I have asked PowWeb support for some help. I'll keep you posted (pardon the pun).

If you DO have to create your own HTDOCS directory, I assume that you'll want to CHMOD it to 755, as are the other directories.

I don't think I'm as well-versed with UNIX as you are, so your message above was a bit cryptic for me.

Please be more specific, or tell me where to click.

Many thanks.

Depending on your FTP program,, there is a different way to see and change the CHMOD (which sets the file or directory permissions). Using WS-FTP, there is a setting, right click the Directory and you'll see CHMOD.. you click execute in all 3 boxes. In another program it would be different.. for eample, FTP-Voyager,, you get to CHMOD using the properties of the file or directory.

If you feel uncomfortable,, I suggest waiting for support to assist.

Thank you, Sandy, for your reply. JJ was able to dig me out of the immense hole I'd fallen into.

I appreciate all your efforts. You have renewed my faith in my fellow man and "help" with computer topics has taken on the original form it had in 1975 when I received my computer science degree. Then, we all WANTED to help each other.

Thank you again, especially you, JJ.

Thanks ... glad to assist. You'll find many here in the forum who will jump to your aid. All you need to do is ask, and the help will come; i.e., as JJ did!

AMC,

One other thing you should be aware of with a 'Nix system, is that it is very case sensitive. So any files that you have named with CAPS, you need to make sure the code pointing to the file is also in CAPS.

I've just gotten to where ALL of my files are in lower case, that way I don't have to worry about my CRS disease kicking in and causing problems for me.
