Bandwith 12GB per month

If you have some Multimedia files, Audio or even worse Video,
how does this add up to your bandwith consumption ?

A Real Audio tune is easily 3 or more MB for slow speed, more for higher quality.

A Video Clip many times as much

Have other user had problems and big bills for exceeding their bandwith ?

It all, sadly, adds up....

Frequency is what counts when you have big files. You can have big files and no activity, which is no problem. Lots of activity and you're in trouble. Try to guesstimate the amount of accesses you'll have and base the file sizes/movies you upload on this. Keep an eye on your bandwidth, and if it's getting out of control just pull the files. Have a small version of the file available so people don't have to download the really big one unless they're sure they want it. It takes up more space, but could mean fewer large downloads...

I have 400mb online with another server and run 1.6GB bandwidth a month 'cause people don't go looking at the big files unless they really want to.

is this any help at all???

Thank you very much for the tips, but how to go about it ?

I guess most people want to have maximum exposure of their
sites and hope for a lot of traffic. How can you guesstimate the
amount of access when you start ? Are there any rules,
any statistics, any studies that have been done ?
(might be an interesting subject for a doctoral thesis)

>Keep an eye on your bandwidth

Again how, are their any tools on this server that allow you to
do so ? Any third party program ? Or do you just wait until
you receive a warning and a bill ?

I had a look at www.fantasyjackpalance.com and like
the make-up very much, but I feel the thumbnails are
discouragingly small and I did not see any sound or video
files (or did I miss something ?) that really take up a lot of megs.

My concern is music - big files or nothing worth listening to

Thank you very much for your help

You should be able to monitor your usage in your ops page (https://ops.powweb.com/).
Log in and go to:
Packages, HTTP, webstats (and you may need to turm them on).

I'm not sure exactly what this will tell you, since I've never needed to worry about my Powweb size and didn't actually have them turned on. But if it doesn't tell you your bandwidth usage I'd be a bit worried.

Re my site: the fjp content is generally small pictures, but with a 100 to 200k larger image. I've a host of large qiuality scans in the synth dept, but still nothing that would compare to heavy music files, except through having a very large amount of smaller files. You're right about the thumbs. I was trying to get a nice balance of thumb sizes to number per page, but have been increasing the sizes with new additions.

If the web stats doesn't tell you what you need to know, then I'm afraid it could well be abck to guesstimations (and checking the raw access logs).

bfc!!!

Anything you download, like MP3s from your site, whatever, takes up a lot of bandwidth. Even flash takes up a lot. If I have a Flash movie thats about 2 megs total, and i get 50 hits an hour, I'm giving out 100 megs every hour. Flash and downloads suck it right out.
