video editing

I want to capture a short scene or two from video on my hard drive, or a dvd. Then I want to use those clips in a presentation, for my class project. Can anyone tell me how to do this and what to use?

Hi Shawn

That is a really broad topic you broached with a few sentences. There are a few things you need to consider.

What is the source of the video? You need to be very careful about streaming content that originated on a DVD. Do you you have the rights to re-use the clips? Be careful because you dont want to violate your Powweb TOS.

Next, you have to look at where the clips are (you did say on your hardrive), what format they are in, if you need to capture them somehow, edit and convert them to a format that is supported in Powweb, and then look at how to set up the files on your site so they can be accessed for streaming. There are a few threads in the Forums already that should get you started, and then if they dont get you where you want to go, then come on back and I am sure we will be able to help you.

Shawn: First of all are you going to use a camera to download
the video to your hard drive? IF so, did your camera come with a fire wire (IEEE 1394) cable? or can you do it with USB? Check the manual. Find out if you can even do what you want to do...then check out a few forums. The forum for your camera

No, I am not going to use a camera, the movies have either been downloaded, or are on dvd. Second, this is for educational, one time use purposes...not to be posted on the web.
I think I might have found a nice freebee, by the name of virtual dub, that acts as an editor and a recorder. I just have to figure out how to use it. Unless yall have any better ideas.
All I wanted to do was to take a couple of seconds of a given movie and paste that scene on a presentation (like frontpage or powerpoint) for use for a school project. I just never knew how complex it was to get the end product.
I do thank you all so much, for any and every advice given...I knew that this was the place to turn to.

I love simple projects. Especially ones that require me to reinvent the wheel.

I dont know that app you mentioned, sorry. It's been a while, but I think I used to do Powerpoint addons with mpeg formatted clips. Certainly FP would let you use mpegs, too, and pretty much every computer out there will be able to see these clips if they are in that format. That might not be the case with other video formats.

I know that those programs, (FP & Powerpoint) will allow me to use mpeg type clips for add ins, what I don't know how to do is take a full length movie and extract a clip ( a short scene) from it, to use in PP or FP. This is where I am pulling out my hair. How do I extract that clip???? Please help!!!

In order to view, edit and convert DVD encoded video you need a DVD encoding application. I have not gotten into that yet, having only done some work with mpegs and Real Media format up to this point.

You might check out this site as a starting point, though. It lists various applications that would probably do what you need.

If you are starting out with clips in formats other than DVD or mpeg, you might need to find other conversion apps. Some listed in the above mentioned site might do it, or you can do a search of www.downloads.com and put video, video conversion, and video file conversion into the search field. A number of applications turned up that might be helpful. You can also look at the user ratings and costs of each app. Some have trial versions and/or low price tags.

Last, you might look at this next site. It has a very comprehensive database on "how-to" regarding video applications. You might find more answers there.

Thanks Dale!!! That did the trick. I went to digital-digest and downloaded a free trial software app that allowed me to cut and paste and is working great. Thanks to you all that also helped me in my quandry. Much gratitude....shawn
