Unhappy Biggggg Problem With Ftp

I am having problems uploading files.

I tried to use WS_FTP Pro, CuteFTP, FTP Explorer and even command line in DOS prompt to upload files, neither of these methods worked.

I only had success uploading files <50K. Anything larger it'll transfer like 1x%-2x% then stops transferring. I tried with jpg files, and even small flash files (most does work) does not work. The funny thing is, I can see the transfer rate go all the way down to 0Kb/s. I tried to upload the files in both Windows 2000 & Windows 98, still won't work.

I have also tried taking out the router and directly connect my ADSL modem to my computer and it still won't work. I am sure the FTP programs are set up correctly, I tried using passive and non passive mode. I also tried other things in there but nothing seems to work!

I tried emailing PowWeb Tech Support and they asked me to call my ISP so I did. They also cannot find out where the problem lies. At first, they found a problem with their side of the network, then the problem was corrected, but still it does not work. I also tried using http to upload files to my ISP's webspace, none of them work.

They asked me to try http://speed-test.net
I got Throughput: 0.384 Mbps with the 500 Kb Upload test. The funny thing is the test is able to finish while I cannot upload files that big. This was done without the router (same result with the router).

I tried setting up a server for my friend to download files, but they can only download parts of a file, like I can only upload small parts of a file.

I do not know where the problem lies, hope some of you can help me solve my problem.

THANKS!!!

transfer troubles

Are you using a personal firewall? It might need to be configured to allow these transfers.

Just a thought.

Hope this helps

wish I could help

I wish I could help you more. I am pretty sure there have been two other threads with people having the same trouble as you. I dont recall them posting that they had found a cure to the problem, but they must have.

It would be great if people post those solutions to this or any other problem they get resolved so that others who are industrious enough to search the Forum for an answer might save themselves a lot of time and trouble.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help this time

Try downloading LeechFTP through the download link from the Tutorial to set it up at the Unofficial PowWeb Support site and see if that fixes the problems.

sounds like your ISP's bandwidth...I know mann...no more bandwidth stuff...hehe...but seriously if you can't even http through TO them you certainly can't get PAST them...if i'm understanding the sequence correctly...you mentioned a router...what are you networked for and if it's a business there's probably a switch between the router and the hub you're on...just some random thoughts...good luck

my domain is www.andyhuifansclub.com
thanks

I have 3 computers to my home network (with a router) sharing my ADSL. Even if I unplug the network and go online with my own computer, I still cannot upload. This is really queer....

Thumbs down ftp...BIGGGGGGG problem here too!!!!

I am one of those people who had ftp problems and they still have not been resolved. I have two packages. The first site works like a charm. I use Cute ftp

The 2nd site was placed with orion and I have not been able to ftp anything since early March. Emails flow back and forth with the support crew and accomplish nothing.

On April 8th I spoke at length with a very nice techie named Galax and he took me through every test he could think of. He checked all my settings and we also tried the ftp.yoursite.com

Again, nothing worked. Galax determined, after conferring with another techie, that this was a problem on PowWeb's end and he would forward the whole night's episode to the Administrators.

I still have not been contacted. I cannot continue to stay with PowWeb when I cannot ftp and they will not take action.

i'm sure you've already looked but are you sure you have 2 sessions on cute ftp???...i like ws_ftp much better...uninstalled cute ftp...well wait that doesn't make sense...you would simply be ftping to the wrong server...hm...if it works on one server and not another with the same settings except for the server name the prob almost has to be on their end...lotta complaining about tech support lately...seems like the people in here end up solving half the probs...but if it's on orion's side there's nothing we can do...try and catch starr or andrew in here and tell them the problem is almost 2 months old...that's unacceptable...good luck

FYI: I was able to FTP into this account and upload and delete, re-upload 500K + files w/ no slowdowns or erratic behavior.

I even tried it via my old dial account I keep around.

Lightbulb Problem Solved!!!

THANKS EVERYONE for the help!

Since there was nothing wrong at PowWeb's end, I called up my ISP again, they brought my problem to the second tier tech support since I tried everything with the first level and nothing worked.

Actually, Danu was right, there was some problem with a switch at their end as the tech guy told me. The tech guy was very helpful because he said the engineer will fix the problem. He called me back and told me he changed machines for me (my ip will change) and configured everything and finally got it working! He told me the customer ahead of me had the same problem!

I wish every tech guys are this helpful!!!
Good luck Nana!!!

Red face Thanks Starr and Michael, BUT.....

Everyone at the company says THEY can access the site. Techies from home can access the site. You can access the site. I realize it doesn't make any sense.

I downloaded three other ftp programs, thinking maybe it was Cute. None of them worked either. I called Cute and they allowed me to download another one in case mine was corrupted.

On April 8th Galax had me change all the settings back and forth: PASV, firewall, advanced, etc. He spent probably 45 minutes with me trying to find the problem.

How could the problem be on my end when 4 ftp programs will not work? Also, it's strange that I was able to get in originally, when the account was set up, upload the whole website, go past the 30 days and then the ftp access DIES.

I asked them to maybe change my host address but there was no reply.

Today I have received two emails, one suggesting I try the PASV mode and the other asking what part doesn't work? This is what I mean about useless emails flowing.

Thanks so much for listening.

strange...you can ftp the first account and not orion?...we gotta look at each miniscule step one at a time and see...first make absoltely sure sure you can get to the other acciount with ease...then try pinging orion...then double chexk your settings...the domain name for orion the other user name and passwird etc...and are you getting any error messages reported...if so what are they?...are you using dial-up to the same isp account etc...i guess short of knowing the other accounts user name and passwird we hafta know what happens at each step...we'll figure it out...is this from home or work?....same computer, on a network?...let's start there

Thanks, friends, for trying to help me. They never came through and I am moving my site elsewhere. There is no problem with my Cute ftp with other hosts or with my other account here.

Here is the correspondence, just to show you what has been going back and forth.

Nicholas,
You wrote: Yes, Galax was referring to you trying another computer on another isp connection. Was your domain not being resolved somehwere? Make sure your browser cache is
cleared before continuing. Please let us know if you need anything else.

My Reply:

I do not have access to another computer with another isp connection and should not be expected to have it. The service on this site has been pitiful and I am transferring it to another webhost. I have had no problem using my Cute ftp with the Parlor account or now elsewhere with the Pearls account.

Since you could not resolve the problem at your end I will be writing to management and requesting a pro rate cancellation, once the transfer has gone through. I had been so happy with PowWeb with my Parlor account. I am very disappointed with the Pearls service and unhappy that I have to move it.

nana,

I've reread everything here and no where does it state what the exact nature of your problem is. Not being able to FTP anything encompasses a wide array of items. Could you please explain what you've done and any error messages you've recieved.

The exact nature of the problem is: after the initial uploading of my entire site via ftp.... the orion ftp connection CLOSED on me. I was no longer able to ftp "anything." Galax, a company techie, spent a long time on the phone with me and checked all my settings - he determined the "problem" was at their end. I did
not have any problems with the ftp connection to my account on the mercury server. I use Cute and that company allowed me to download a free program to be sure mine wasn't corrupt. I did and it wasn't. I downloaded three free ftp programs from the Internet and not ONE of them could make the connection. All of this info was repeatedly given to the company with lame responses like noted before. They have a log of the errors. This is from tonight's attempt:

STATUS:> Connecting to orion.powweb.com
STATUS:> Connecting to orion.powweb.com (ip = 64.63.125.42)

i think mann's gone to that great moderator holiday inn in the sky...manually change the user name and password in the session in the ftp program...if you have more than one account you may be snatching the wrong session on default...or the kigin info is incorrect or it's wrong in powweb's database...you're getting there but it thinks you're a hack...hehe

Nana,

I sent you several PMs asking for your UN/PW, but you never read them. IF I was able to log into your account on orion, that would have showed that it wasn't a problem on their end.

I was willing (and still am) to try and help you find the problem.

Sorry to see you go!

Thumbs down

So far I've had nothing but trouble trying to FTP a website onto the Powweb.com server. I'm using FTP Voyager and when I attempt transfer files up or down, it will move a few k then stop responding. I then get "Connection Closed by the Server" messages in my status window. Repeating about every two seconds until I cancel. It's not my configuration; it does this from systems at home and at work and with different clients (FTP Voyager, WS_FTP and a command prompt). I have no problems connecting to 2 sites I have on Interland.Com and a site I maintain on SNET.Net. I sent a support request in via the online form and I have not gotten any assistance as of yet. WTF?

Walt,

Are you using passive (PASV) mode? If not, try setting your FTP client to use it and give it another go.

I've tried it both ways with FTP Voyager and WS_FTP. Makes no difference. I’m only using one connection per session. I don't seem to have any issues with the other hosts that I use. I believe it's a problem on Powweb's side. If they don't come up with a solution soon, I'm going to exercise the 30-day money back guarantee.

well based on the log session Nana posted they didn't get past authentication so they're going to have to sort our ther username/password before they can even worry about transfers.

If starr says he was able to move files around I have no doubt he did it as he is a bit of a Nazi about finding/testing problems. If he can't find one, its likely not there. On top of that, the thread was rather ambiguous. First they confirm its their ISP and they have multiple customers there with the same issue and they'll resolve it and then its not clear what happened after that other then they're switching hosts.

for future reference there is no difference between ftp accounts on the servers. If John Doe is having a problem ftping on venus everyone on venus would have the same problem. Its either all or nothing as there are absolutely no user specific ftp constraints (bandwidth, idle time, etc). They all use the same ftp daemon, they were all compiled from the same source files they are all run with the same configuration. As a rule of thumb if one person is having a ftp problem and no one else is its generally 100% likely its local to them.
