Awstats 404 error

Awstats display the following:
**************************************************
Required but not found URLs (HTTP code 404)
URL (3) Error Hits Referers
/index.htm 12 http://forum.powweb.com/showthread.php
/_vti_bin/shtml.exe/_vti_rpc 2 -
/resources.html 1 http://www.channel1records.com/resources.html
**************************************************
According to Awstat there were 15 'hits' producing this error.
Can someone explain why this is happening and what can be done about it? Is it a critical issue that needs to be resolved immediately?

These "/_vti_bin/shtml.exe/_vti_rpc 2" are for FrontPage and there are people who go looking for sites that have FP extensions turned on to exploit. I've also been told that it's possible for FP users to use their FP program as a browser, and that will cause the same 404 errors.

Basically, those errors are just a part of having a domain on the Internet. As long as you are not using FP extensions, or if you are, that you have secured your site properly, it's nothing to get worried about.

jj........forgot to ask...do the error 404 hits occur because my site is properly secured and therefore can't be entered in the manner you described? (re:fp extensions)
