Question Linux Network

Okay, im looking to build a file server for my home network, im already wireless with wrt54g by linksys, im wanting to remove windows xp from the server and install a linux based system, i need something not to hard to install, with broad hardware compatibilty including w.e. wireless card i put in... i dont really need a GUI based system, since it will only be a file server... but i need to get it running, what would be my best bet? Redhat? Mandrake, gnome... free bsd etc... also, the rest of the network is win xp, ntfs file system, ive heard linux has drivers to read ntfs but is there a chance for corruption, etc?
