Accept Credit Cards?
Hi, everyone.
I have a client wanting a store front. I've not done a shopping cart or setup for accepting credit cards. In trying to research, I'm getting overwhelmed by all of the options. Does anyone have a really good company that they use and can recommend? What are some pointers you can give me. What to look for and what to stay away from. Any feedback y'all can offer me is greatly appreciated. Thanks! Sherry |

Hi Sherry,
I don't know much about accepting credit cards, but here is a good shopping cart script. It has just about any feature that you'd ever need, and is set up for credit cards and Pay Pal. Pay Pal is one of the few places that allow the use of foreign credit cards. Anyway, you might want to give this script a once over http://www.merchantorderform.com/ Just my "For What It's Worth" |

Thanks, (jj)
I believe I've seen this one mentioned here on this board, now that I think about it. I checked it out and have added it to my proposal to my client. Still not sure about credit card acceptance companies, though. Anyone else out there have any suggestions??? Thanks a lot! Sherry |

verisign
I don't know how much you are willing to spend to get online transaction processing, but Verisign offers a service called PayFlow Link wherein you host your web site wherever you want to host it, and you only send people to the Verisign secure server to place their order.
Essentially, they host a form for you on their secure servers, and process the transaction on your behalf. The advantage is that they are big, so they accept a lot of different forms of payment, and it's very convenient that you only need to host the order form pages there which allows you to host the rest of your site anywhere you want. The disadvantage is that it costs $180.00 to set up the account, and it costs 20.00 per month to subscribe. There is also a 500 transaction per month limit on such accounts. Please keep us all informed about your experiences with transaction hosting services, and I'll do the same if I ever bite the bullet and subscribe to one. PS - you did say this was for a client, and you seemed concerned with it being a 'good' company, so I suggested Verisign. I don't think you would have any trouble convincing even a bank that Verisign is a secure and safe place for their commerce. Last edited by codewarrior; 7-12-02 at 08:19 AM.. |

We started our little home-based business about 14 years ago. We did most of our business at antique and collectibles shows then and it wasn't long before we started to look for a merchant bank account so we could accept credit cards. I started calling the big banks and was consistently turned away. In near desparation I called the local branch of a small regional bank and they accepted us. Of course, I don't think they quite understood what we did at the time, but my point was that standard merchant accounts are available if you look long and hard. Looking back now its obvious that I should have started with the smaller banks because they're hungrier for the business. You can run into some high start-up costs with banks, too. Most seem to require the use of the little electronic terminals to process your transactions, which you can buy or lease (usually around $300.00 to buy, as I recall). We still use the arcane manual imprinter to create receipts for all our transactions and it works out just fine. We still do shows where the portability is handy. Best of all, by working with our regular bank the funds get deposited directly into our business checking account without any fuss or delay.
