Question PHPBB instant installer- can I use to upgrade?

If I run the PHPBB instant installer, will it upgrade my existing PHPBB site keeping my current database and layout in tact? I have a play site that uses PHPBB that I haven't done anything with for several months, since the PHP changes were made by PowWeb earlier in the year. Now I want to get the site back online, but I don't want to loose any of the data or structure that it used to have. When I type in the site address now I get the message: "phpBB : Critical Error, Could not connect to the database".

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance!!!

I don't know exactly how powweb has it setup, but i'm certain it wont just upgrade your forum.
You could probably backup the database from your original forum, delete your forum, run the instant installer, and then restore the database from your original. That should import all of the data from the old to the new.

EDIT: In all reality, it's probably just as easy to goto phpbb.com download the latest release and follow the instructions to upgrade. It's not hard at all especially if your forum has no hacks/mods done to it.

upgrading phpbb

Unfortunately with my whole phpbb forum not functioning properly, I don't know how I'm able to do a backup of the data. I think there was a way to do it from inside the admin panel if I remember correctly, but I have no way of getting to that now. When I look out on the PHPBB site they mainly talk about doing it that way as well. They talk aobut how to upgrade, but their instructions say to use a command line which I know we don't have access to here. Someone in another post on here had talked about using something called "myshell" i believe it was to be able to run commands from, but I cannot figure out how to setup myshell. Could someone maybe point me how to do that? Thanks!

All you need to do is goto phpmyadmin http://phpmyadmin.powweb.com/ Then when you are in there click on export, and save as file.
Also if you read through the instructions of how to upgrade they will tell you how to upgrade without having shell access. Basically all you do is backup your database through phpmyadmin, then you upload the new files, and update the database. To update the database there should be a file called something like updatetolatest.php in the install folder.
When you go to download the update from phpbb there should be a download for the latest version with only changed files (only files that have code changed in them). Those are the files you will need to upload. This is assuming you have no mods/hacks done.

solved

Thanks for your help, Quick. I did what you said but even after that I was still getting the errors. It ended up that the password saved in the config.php file was incorrect, and that's what prevented access to the database. Once I reset that in Ops and updated the file then all worked well.
Thanks!
