installing fonts???

hey guys,
i have some fonts that i want to install on my computer.....so i put them in the fonts folder in control panels (im talking about a pc computer as if u didnt already know)....so i put them in there and when i try to access the say through microsoft word, photoshop.....any program, they dont show why is this??

maybe this will help u help me..... i had this problem before on another computer and a technician typed something in in ms-dos i have no idea what but i figure someone in here must know. i hope u guys can help me out.

Well, first of all, I would suggest that you remove them from your Fonts folder, and then re-install them using the suggested method. Open the Fonts folder, then click on the File (I believe) menu, and select Install New Font (or something similar). Browse to the dir where they are on your computer, select them, and away you go. THEN, check to see if they show up.

If that fails, ensure that they are of a type that your computer can understand. For example, fonts designed for PCs will not necessarily work on Macs, and vice versa. Additionally, font types on a PC can vary. TrueType fonts should show up without the aid of any special tools, but Type1 fonts cannot be understood by Windows without assistance (usually Adobe's ATM). What type of fonts are you having the trouble with?

Also, there are likely theoretical limits to how many fonts an application will support. If you have too many fonts, then your applications will begin to drop some here and there. I have personally never gone over 300 fonts, but I've gotten close to it with no problems. Verify that you aren't crippling your system by making it load up too many fonts.

Generally, if you are trying to use a font that does not contain outlines (Type1/PostScript), then it would be a bitmap font, and this would require a helper application to get noticed.

There are workarounds for individual programs, usually involving editing one or more configuration files, but that would vary by application.

my way.....

although technically correct....

in you're in windows..... download.... or put all of your downloaded fonts into a seperate folder..... "not fonts"

Browse to that folder.... right click on that font.... and select "install".....


a little quciker than using the font's applet in control panel....

SB, when i right click on the font it doesnt give me the option "install".

and when i go to help it tells me to (in the fonts folder in control panels) to go to file-intall fonts or something like that.....but the problem is it doesnt have that option in there either.

If you are using windows...you can drag all the fonts from one folder to C:\windows\fonts folder and it will automatically install all the fonts.

Installing fonts can be achived from the control panel as well.

That is how I install all my fonts, just put them in the c:\windows\fonts folder and they install automatically (I`m on Xp Home if that matters).

thanks for ur help, i am able to install fonts now. i called for tech support and they said that this was a common issue with microsoft. so anyway they fixed it for me and now it works.

so, what was the verdict on the problem?

i got the help from an online chat tech using the screen sharing technology gateway has. they took control of my computer and they went into ms-dos and typed something in...i tried to write what they were typing in down but they did it too damn fast. by the time i looked up they had already gotten out of there and had it working. so i had no clue

i have an OLD gateway kicking around here somewhere...
I might have to invent that problem on that machine, and chat in with them... no sharing tech on that machine, so they would have to spill the beans about what they do... heh

just make sure u tell them u dont have the "install new fonts" command in the fonts folder under file works every time

To keep my Windows/Fonts folder from getting too big, I keep my fonts organized in other folders. When I want to use one, I open the font file, minimize it and it will show up in my graphics program or notepad. May work with other applications too
