Email client error
Hello, I have an associate who is experiencing a computer error, and since I don't know the answer, I was hoping someone here might...
My associate uses Outlook 2002 (I believe her OS is Win 2000) for her email client. For the past few days, but most noticeably today, when tries to send email, she has received an error back, saying the following: 550 5.7.1 relaying denied. ip lookup failed. [x.x.x.x] (where the [x4] is an IP address --assuming hers?) She is not experiencing Internet connection issues, and she has sent and received email, but this error message appeared 5x today. I am sure the email addresses are valid; one was mine, and she received this message shortly after attempting to send it. To me, it sounds like a client-side error, but if anyone has any insight, I'd be most appreciative. |

Since this error just appeared recently, I'd say it's most likely a problem with the SMTP server she is using. (If she has access to another server, maybe her ISP's, suggest that she try it out.) It's also possible that this is a problem with a firewall if one was installed on her computer or LAN recently.
Good luck finding out what the problem is. |

That's definitely a server error. The 5xx code gives it away.
This error indicates that the SMTP server: 1) does not allow mail to pass through it unless it's either beginning or terminating on that network. This is a good thing, as it helps to diminish spamming somewhat. AND/OR 2) it thinks that your associate is not on the network when trying to send the email. This is usually determined by the IP of the sender. Now, this happens a lot with cable modem subscribers who also have AOL or some other dial-up service (as a backup, for travelling, or whatever). Basically, the settings in the email client are the same as they are on the home connection, but then another connection is used, and the email is denied from relay. Is this person using a different connection than normal? Are they sending through the appropriate SMTP server? You mentioned that she is getting this error when trying to send to you... Here's an experiment: Instead of her just composing a new email to you, have her reply to a message that you have sent her. Immediately after she does that, she should then send a fresh email to you. This would help narrow down the problem somewhat, as it would allow you to see which (if either) comes through. This is most common with broadband providers, as broadband connections are the connection of choice for spammers (for obvious reasons), and it has happened before that entire broadband provider IP ranges (24.*.*.*, for example) have been denied like this. Regardless, if this issue persists, she should contact her ISP's support department to get details (or more likely, provide them). Good luck! |

Thanks very much for your insight. I have a similar question... Grendel, you mentioned that the 5** gives it away as a server error? Is there some site or list for resident idiots that lists the type of errors and how to troubleshoot?

Sure! Here are some additional resources on that:
HTTP: http://docs.yahoo.com/docs/writeus/error.html http://www.pcin.net/help/articles/htmlerrorcodes.shtml Good one from CERN here: http://offline.home.cern.ch/offline/...ror_codes.html As far as error codes that are specific to SMTP issues, check this listing: http://www.networksorcery.com/enp/protocol/smtp.htm ![]() |
