plug in mic and hear roaring

Hi, all. Have a brand new Sony GRX570 laptop for a month now. Last time I
used the mic to chat over Yahoo Messenger and it's fine. Haven't used it
for a while, just found out last night that whenever I plug in the mic into
it, I hear continuing roaring sound only and can't talk into it; but if only
plug in the speaker, it's fine. the built-in speakers work fine, too.
Just that I can't plug in the mic and talk thru a mic.

What could possibly cause the problem? I checed device manager, see nothing
wrong there. TIA

Sorry...I just could not resist not saying it! The point is that it is very difficult to think of something. You would need to know everything...what OS is installed, the drivers, devices etc...

Yes, I know it's hard - but couldn't resist trying my luck. I've been spoiled by newsgroups' great helps Hate to deal with tech support, I've been wanting to purchase service/insurance online, but didn't . CompUsa's package sounded too much to me.

It's one month old Sony with all the specs here

I have an HP desktop, whenever I turn the speakers on pretty loud and have the mic unmuted I hear feedback coming from the speakers. I think I have the same problem as you, here`s a simple fix, turn the speakers and mic volume down a little by little until they are not producing feedback. When you have just the right combination of volumes the speakers won`t produce feedback.

#1 In the "Playback" settings in your Mixer, make sure that the Mic IS muted. This should be left at this setting, the mic will still work in record mode (which is the same as voice via the net)

#2 Does it make the roaring noise if you only plug the Mic in and use the external (built-in) speakers?

#3 Have you tried a different Mic? It may be that the grounding shield of the cable has broke or shorted to the mic element.

Just some things to check and try.

Can't find mixer as in Win98 (now it's XP in a brand new laptop). Only "Sounds and Audio Devices". There's only one slide control for volumn, and even I try to do a volumn control in recording and playing individually, I couldn't cause I need to install Sndvol32.exe which I have a hard time searching for it in MS's site.

the mic roars no matter I plug in the ear phone or use the built-in speakers of the laptop, as long as the mic's plugged in, it roars.

It worked last month...so I am not sure getting a new mic would help, but would get one anyway as I could use one extra for my other old computer.

The only thing different is I put a router about a week or two ago to network all 3 computer in the house to share the cable connection...neh...nothing to do with it, right?

In XP:

Click Start > Settings > Control Panel
Double-click "Sounds and Audio Devices"
On the "General" tab, put a checkmark in "Place volume icon in the taskbar"
Click the "Apply" button
Click the "Advanced" button (will open the volume mixer)
On the Play Control menu click Options > Advanced
Select your sound card in the "Mixer device" drop-down
Select Playback under "Adjust volume for"
Checkmark each device for which you want to control the volume
Click the "OK" button to set your choices
On the Play Control dialog menu click Options > Advanced
Select your sound card in the "Mixer device" drop-down
Select Record under "Adjust volume for"
Checkmark each device for which you want to control the volume
Click the "OK" button to set your choices

That should help. Sounds more complicated than it is but most things usually do when list out the steps.

Whenever you want to adjust a device's volume, just double-click the little speaker icon in your System Tray (where the date & time is).

when click the option of "Place volume icon in the taskbar", it says I don't have the volumn control program installed, please use Add/Remove Programs...but I went there and try adding window components or try searching in the CD Sony provided, all to no avail. Guess I have to resort to Sony's tech support.

I went to Sony's site to download the Yamaha® AC-XG WDM Audio Miniport Driver Utility, and when asked if want to install again as is installed already, I hit yes to reinstall. Guessed it, the roaring sound is gone when I plugged the mic in...now just I can find some warm body at this hour to try to talk over Yahoo Messenger...

BTW, anywhere I can find a volumn control program to use? Thanks again.
