What if files are located outside htdocs?

First I'm powweb user. And I've 5 blogs.
But all blog's files are outside htdocs folder.
Once my support said me that I should create folders inside htdocs.
What's the matter. I can't understand

folders/files in htdocs are web-viewable. folders/files outside htdocs are only accessible by scripts.

Unless they're setup as sub-domains or 'pointed' additional domains.

Some things will not work as expected outside of htdocs but as things are working for you that way great! Wordpress is flexible and easily moveable should you have problems.

my sites are all inside the main htdocs, for example:
htdocs/site1/htdocs/
htdocs/site2/htdocs
There is a .htaccess in the top htdocs that points to the correct site.

I have several domains. On epointing to htdocs, the others pointing outside htdocs, each to their own directory. One domain is for a forum (SMF) that has run without a glitch for over five years. Now support tell me that it can only work when it is inside htdocs?

Very confused.

That is exactly what I did. Why do support tell me that this is not the case ?

If you are running PHP applications, it is better to create sub domain name directories within htdocs folder as it is root directory of your hosting account and the temporary account URL points to it. Creating directories outside htdocs may arise some permissions issue with PHP files. Even, the help link at http://www.powweb.com/knowledgebase/...?ArticleID=172 suggests to create sub domain directories within root (htdocs) folder. Also, note that the cgi-bin directory where the sessions will be stored is within htdocs folder.

Thank you . Will read this again, but ......

It has worked for five years and now suddenly it does not work anymore.
What has changed since three days ago.

btw if I understand the link you provided (and which I had seen before) you can have other directories, as long as they have an htdocs inside ..

Create an htdocs folder within the subdomain directory.

Example: /subdomain/htdocs

The cause might be the change of permissions for the account root / (not htdocs). I'm not sure about it and support may provide the exact reason.

I don't understand what you mean by "it's not suggested ..." Do you have any background reading, links or additional information?

All I can find are the Powweb tutorials (see earlier links in this thread) and those explicitly allow other directories in the root in addition to htdocs, phpsessions etc.
Also I find the words 'root' and 'home' directory confusing. Some support agents refer to htdocs as the 'root' but actually there is one a level higher marked with a little blue globe in filemanager.

There are probably still posts or even threads on this in these forums on the topic. The information was provided by staff members when they were regular visitors.

This is probably because the Powweb platform support is shared with other 'properties' within the larger group. Historically, Powweb had the htdocs as the www root, visible to the world with the level above as an area for scripts. When Powweb transferred to new owners this wasn't the method used. In keeping with many hosts, they new owners used 'home' as the root top level and html as the folder for world viewable files on many of their properties. The structure visible to customers was retained, but internally their main structure was introduced. This leads to the statements you've seen above.

So, treat htdocs as the place for viewable files (and sub-folders of course) and the level above for scripts.

Think of the htdocs directory as 'DocRoot', as it's still referred to in OPS I believe. The 'Root' directory is the main directory, the 'parent' directory of htdocs.
