Banner size?

Approximately what size should a banner be to fit on a 800x600 resolution. I don't want an incredibly small banner, that's why I went for the 1024x728 resolution. I am at work on a laptop and the 800x600 resolution doesn't look that good on it so any help you could give with suggestions would be nice.

Also, I would like to make this site more interactive, so any suggestions in that way would be great. Thanks.

If I remember correctly, 780 is the "useable" width for the 800x600 resolution.

780 total?

I changed the size, but it just looks so dinky now. That's why I wanted a BIG banner on 1024x728.

banner size vs. files size

Remember that with a larger banner your file size will be larger too. So for those with 56k may not like the larger banner.

Rule of thumb is page should not exceed 60k total. On 56k this is still about a 10sec download time if not more. Considering most never actually get 56K.

Another thought is browser detection to determine if they have 800x600 or 1024x768. then provide the approiate graphic for the resolution detected.

I would cut it down to a total of 775.

I may be a bit smaller...but it willl be quicker and viewable from the majority of visitor resolutions.

Question Browser Detection

Thanks Komik...that's sounds like a definite plan. Ok then, anyone know how to implement that?

cmschool,

Take a look at this. You would need two different pages.
